[ARCHIVED] Safety Tips: Protect Your Bike from Theft

Do your part to make it more difficult for a thief to ride off with your bike.

Issaquah police have seen a recent increase in bike thefts, and ask owners to take simple steps to prevent future incidents:

• Secure your bike every time you park, no exceptions.

• Never leave your unlocked bike unattended, even for a minute.

• Avoid parking your bike in dark areas or places with few people nearby.

• Use a U-lock to secure your bike. It’s more difficult to cut than a cable lock.

• If you prefer a cable lock, make sure it’s thick — at least three-eighths of an inch in diameter. Otherwise, wire cutters will be able to snip through it easily.

• Make sure your bike is properly secured by securing the lock through the frame and both tires.

• Always secure your bike to a bike rack or another solid object. If your bike can be removed, it can be stolen.

We can help if your bike has been lost or stolen.

Our police have teamed up with TrackMole, a free service that helps recover lost and stolen property.

Using your item’s serial number (which can be found on the paperwork that came with it), we can help you find it through TrackMole.

It’s a powerful property tracking and crime prevention tool that helps police departments and others identify owners of lost and stolen properties by using serial numbers.

As soon as the serial number on the property is searched, the owner simultaneously receives emails from TrackMole stating where it is, who has it and how to get it back.

Don’t have the serial number for your stolen item? Call our police department’s non-emergency line at 837-3200 to file a report.

If you don’t have the serial number, a sales receipt, photo of the bike or detailed description can help police.
