[ARCHIVED] You're Invited: Annual Tree Planting Celebration

Celebrate the start of fall and the native tree planting season with Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust's Annual Tree Planting Celebration at Lake Sammamish State Park.

The celebration starts at 9 a.m. Oct. 22, 2016, at the state park, 2000 N.W. Sammamish Road, with half- and full-day shifts available. Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust provides all the tools, plant material, gloves, and project oversight — no experience necessary!

Planting events are excellent for individuals, families, groups, and work teams. To sign up for a volunteer shift, go to

The celebration — sponsored in part by Carter Subaru, Washington State Parks and REI — will include food, music and plenty of tree planting fun for the whole family.

Lake Sammamish State Park provides important habitat for several species of salmon, many birds — including bald eagles, great blue herons and red tailed hawks — and a wide variety of amphibians, insects and other wildlife. Currently the area is extremely degraded by invasive weeds, including blackberry.

Over the past 10 years, volunteers have worked hard to remove invasive species and re-establish native plant communities throughout the park. This year, volunteers have been restoring a new 3.5-acre area along Issaquah Creek.

Volunteers will help this important effort by planting thousands of native trees and shrubs along the banks to create better salmon and wildlife habitat.
