Compact Schools Code
During its Sept. 18 meeting, the City Council will deliberate on proposed changes to development standards for future public schools in all of Issaquah.
The code changes would enable public schools to use available land more efficiently. The City worked with the Issaquah School District in drafting the proposed changes to IMC 18.07.480.
The council’s Land & Shore Committee recommended approval of the proposed code amendments, with the exception of two issues: percentage of impervious surface limits and tree retention requirements. It’s expected these issues will be further discussed during the council’s Sept. 18 meeting.
Zoning Changes West of Highlands
Once a decision is made on development standards for compact schools, the geographic boundaries on a proposed school site west of the Issaquah Highlands will be more definitive.
In turn, the City Council is expected to further discuss a proposal to change the zoning of some land (see map) between the Issaquah Highlands and Interstate 90 during its Oct. 2 meeting.
The land is currently not located in the City of Issaquah – but instead remains an “island” of King County. The City’s proposed zoning would only apply if (and when) annexation to Issaquah takes place.
The county land is currently zoned for mineral or residential (one or four dwelling units per acre), depending on the parcel.
The City’s proposed new zoning would enable several parcels now zoned for residential development to become open space.

Any future development would include more public process once development applications are made.
