The City of Issaquah recently approved a land-use application for Costco Wholesale to expand its international headquarters with a nine-story, 600,000-square-foot building, as well as a 10-story parking garage.
Construction is expected to begin by the end of the year, with completion in 2020.
The expansion – which will be built on Costco’s existing parking lots near Interstate 90
(see map) – is part of a 30-year
development agreement signed by Costco and the City four years ago. The agreement allows the company to grow by as much as 1.5 million square feet, while also ensuring the future development fulfills Issaquah's vision for its commercial core.
Costco, which has called Issaquah home since 1994, is based in the Pickering Place mixed-used development. As Issaquah’s largest employer, its current office space covers 700,000 square feet.
The 30-year agreement provides Costco with predictability as it expands its home office, while partnering with the City to fund a number of
street improvements:
- Widening of East Lake Sammamish Parkway Southeast (completed)
- Extension of Southeast 62nd Street (soon to be completed)
- Improvements to the intersection of 12th Avenue Northwest and state Route 900 (still in review)
After extensive review and public input, the City Council unanimously adopted the development agreement in October 2014.
