Following a large rainfall event in February 2020, a small landslide occurred on King County Parks property adjacent to Newport Way Northwest.
The slide was stabilized in the short term (following a week-long closure of the road), but permanent repairs are needed.
State emergency relief funding is available to reimburse 86.5 percent of the City’s costs to design and construct a permanent fix. The fix will be coordinated with the City’s plans for a future Newport capital project. The City Council is scheduled to vote on accepting emergency funds from the state during its Sept. 8 meeting, which would allow the City to:
- Design the project in late 2020 and early 2021 that would be compatible with the City’s future Newport capital project. This work will also include outreach with the community.
- Install public notification signs onsite.
- Take interim measures, such as installing tarps, before the 2020-2021 wet season, and closely monitor the area.
- Once design is completed, return to the City Council with a more defined cost estimate, and request authorization for the City to provide a 13.5 percent match to the construction costs.
