[ARCHIVED] Equity in Issaquah: Community Convenings

Equity News Item

The City of Issaquah’s Human Services Commission is hosting two virtual community convenings to discuss the role of residents in the City’s equity initiatives, and to brainstorm the creation of a new Board/Commission on equity.

Following the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the demonstrations that followed, the City of Issaquah made a commitment to implement change as a community and to help eliminate the disproportionate damage that racism is doing to our communities of color. The Police Accountability, Equity and Human Services Action Plan endorsed by the Issaquah City Council in August 2020, tasked the Human Services Commission with evaluating the resident’s review of the City’s Equity and Human Services initiatives, and with making recommendations to the Mayor and City Council on the creation of a Board or Commission to address these matters.

To accomplish this task, the Human Services Commission engaged in the first few months in a research, expansion, and planning phase, in which community members of diverse racial backgrounds were invited to be partners in this process.

Now, the Commission is inviting the community to participate in a 2-part convening on the creation of a residents’ oversight board/commission on equity.
