[ARCHIVED] Police Chief's Message to the Community about 2021 Legislation

Chief

Several new police reform bills created during the 2021 session of the Washington State Legislature take effect on Sunday, July 25th.  Although the Issaquah Police Department historically has approached policing within our community under similar guidelines and constraints such as a focusing on de-escalation, minimizing our use of force, and preserving the sanctity of human life, there may be some changes of how we respond to calls for service.  Specifically, HB 1054 Peace Officer Tactics and Equipment and HB 1310 Police Use of Force may affect how we conduct our duties within the community.

The Issaquah Police Department is committed to building public trust, committed to individual responsibility, and committed to working side by side with our community. Our practice of community policing to resolve issues that affect quality of life has not changed.  We will continue to do so, to the best of our abilities, within the new parameters established by the new legislation.

The members of the Issaquah Police Department are incredible at what they do.  They have dedicated their careers to serving this community and to protecting those around them.  They understand the new legislation and are prepared to communicate with you what the changes are.  They will continue to work to build and maintain trust within our community.  The community’s safety is always our first priority.

I encourage you to learn more about the new legislation and to reach out to state Senators and Representatives if you have questions, comments or concerns: https://app.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/ .

The Police Department appreciates your continued support as we work to keep Issaquah an amazing community.
