[ARCHIVED] Inspired by Nature: Art Outside Festival Debuts

Artists are heading outdoors this summer, and they’re inviting the community along with them.

At the Issaquah Highlands Art Outside Festival, community members will enjoy art inspired by nature, interact with artists as they paint outdoors and create their own outdoor art.

The festival will begin July 14, 2014, and culminate July 20 in conjunction with the annual Highlands Day festival in the Issaquah Highlands. Events take place at artEAST Art Center, Blakely Hall, Grand Ridge Plaza, Village Green Park and other Issaquah locations.

For artEAST’s third-annual Heron Rookery Project, stop by Village Green Park to witness environmental artist Karen White facilitate as community organizations build human-sized bird nests using locally acquired natural materials and no hardware. Every day from July 14-17, a different group will build a nest.

An exhibition of grand works, or paintings larger than 16-feet-by-20-feet, will open at Blakely Hall, 2550 N.E. Park Drive, on July 18. The public is encouraged to vote for their favorites throughout the duration of the exhibit.

Artists will head outdoors for the Art Outside Plein Air Festival, to paint scenes throughout Issaquah Highlands.

The festival will bring together artists from throughout the Northwest to paint outside. Plein air, or open air, painting is the centuries-old technique of painting outdoors, on location, using colors and techniques that capture the fleeting effects of natural light.

The festival will take place July 19-20 at locations throughout Issaquah Highlands and culminate during Highlands Day.
