1. How I do apply to your department as a lateral officer?

2. How many positions are available?

The department is in constant need off officers and is accepting applications all year. It is expected that the department will hire two to three officers a year for the foreseeable future.

3. When should I apply?

You can apply any time after you have met the minimum requirements for the position. You may not apply in anticipation of meeting the minimum requirements sometime in the near future.

4. How long does the background investigation take?

Once a lateral applicant has completed the oral interview with passing scores and is selected for a background investigation, the approximate time for the investigation is two to three months.

5. Do laterals have to go through field training?

All laterals (in-state and out-of-state) have to complete the field training program. The program may be shortened depending on the officer's experience.

6. Do laterals have to attend a police academy?

Out-of-state laterals do have to fulfill the requirements for the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Equivalency Academy. Officers will complete a two week equivalency academy. Laterals will attend the equivalency academy after completing the field training program.

7. Do I have to live within a certain distance from Issaquah?

No. Our officers live all over the Puget Sound area.

8. What will my hours of work be?

You must be available to work 12-hour rotating shifts. Patrol officers work four 12-hour shifts, followed by four days off. Officers work two day shifts (6 a.m.-6 p.m.) followed by two night shifts (6 p.m.-6 a.m.).

9. How long must I be with your department before I can move to a higher rank or a specialty position?

Police Corporal
You must have two years of college, equivalent to an associate's degree and a minimum two years of experience in law enforcement with the Issaquah Police Department; or two years of college equivalent to an associate's degree a minimum of four years law enforcement experience with one year experience in law enforcement with the Issaquah Police Department and successful completion of probation.


Police Sergeant
You must have two years of college, equivalent to an associate's degree and a minimum of three years of experience in law enforcement with the Issaquah Police Department; or two years of college, equivalent to an associate's degree and a minimum four years of law-enforcement experience, and with one year law enforcement experience with the Issaquah Police Department and successful completion of probation.
